Exploring Women’s Empowerment

When it comes to promoting women’s empowerment or fostering gender equality, traditional, one-size-fits-all strategies are frequently used, even though it is not always effective or sustainable. Finding sustainable solutions to address systemic social conflicts is challenging, especially when underlying needs unique to every community are not explored and identified first before any interventions. In 2014 I started a social project aimed at gathering information that culminated into a research presentation titled Deconstructing Empowerment. This presentation proposed several unique intervention strategies particularly aimed at women leaders within their local communities as being the primary champions of positive, sustainable change.

Women Negotiating in the STEM professions

In 2019, I attended the International Association for Conflict Management Conference in Dublin, Ireland where I participated as a researcher for Columbia University. Alongside other experts and Columbia University’s Dr. Beth Fisher-Yoshida, we presented our study at a roundtable panel discussion surrounding women’s issues. Our research, titled Women Negotiating in STEM Professions explores women’s narratives while working within a hyper-masculine industry.

The International Association for Conflict Management encourages scholars to develop and disseminate theory, research, and experience that is useful for understanding and improving conflict management. The association’s annual conference focuses on the research and challenges of the field of conflict management.

Negotiation Workshops and Simulations

I have worked on several partnerships and projects primarily focused on managing and strengthening interpersonal relationships through self-awareness and personal agency. Most of my work, grounded in theory and practice, comes in the form of speaking engagements, workshops or presentations around problem solving and strategic communications. I select case studies adapted from real-life scenarios, varying from salary negotiations, workplace conflict to social disputes. Most of my presentations cover the basics of negotiation with a focus on interest-based strategies and the application of effective communication tactics.
